Food is the prime necessity of life. Although several aspects of food should always by kept in mind, viz., adequacy, balancing of constituents, digestion, assimilation & safety (food hygiene), the basic things of foods & food habits are-
Food is to be taken with a good appetite at regular intervals, to taken at regular hours each day.
Food should be well masticated.
Food should be clean, prepared in clean utensils in a clean premises & kept covered & better still in refrigerator.
Salads (fresh vegetables), fruits & green vegetables should from a part of each food meal.
Milk, as far as practicable, should also form a part of the meal.
It should be preferable to take fluid either before or sometimes after the principal meals to help digestion & also in between meals.
Food rich in carbohydrates & fats are harmful.
Quantity should be adjusted according to age, sex & other necessities, eating too much is as bad as too littlie.
Fasting or light dieting at fortnightly or weekly interval helps to maintain good health.
The following foods should be avoided- Under-ripe & over-ripe fruits, food contaminated with dust, flies, dirt, over spiced & highly irritant food, frequent drinks of tea or coffee, alcoholic drink etc, & narcotic substances like opium, cocaine, dhatura, bhang, charas, heavy smoking, tobacco & pan-chewing etc., are definitely harmful to health & demoralizing & should be strictly avoided.
Night meal should be lighter & person should not go to sleep with a heavy loaded stomach.
Certain types of food do not suit some people as they cause allergic symptoms, e.g., eggs, prawns, shellfish, certain fruits like oranges & certain vegetables like ladies fingers.
