Meat from the offspring of a cloned cow entered the food chain last year and was eaten, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has said. Experts discovered two bulls born in the UK from embryos harvested in the US had both been slaughtered. Meat from one of the bulls had entered the food chain, but meat from the other was stopped from being sold after the animal was killed last week, the FSA said. The agency pointed out there was no evidence that consuming products from healthy clones, or their offspring, posed a food safety risk. But it added that “meat and products from clones and their offspring are considered novel foods and would need to be authorised before being placed on the market”. The FSA said of the bulls: “The first, Dundee Paratrooper, was born in December 2006 and was slaughtered in July 2009. Meat from this animal entered the food chain and will have been eaten. “The second, Dundee Perfect, was born in March 2007 and was slaughtered on July 27 2010. Meat from this animal has been stopped from entering the food chain.” Food Standards Agency Chief Executive On Cloned Meat It is thought the meat, likely to have ended up in a pie or burger, was sold in Scotland. The finding was made in an inquiry into claims a British farmer admitted selling milk from the offspring of a cloned cow without labelling it as such. An animal named Dundee Paradise was traced which was believed to be part of a dairy herd but the FSA could not confirm whether or not its milk was sold. UK
